Think Before You Click

Think before you Click (002)

What is phishing? Can I prevent it?

Phishing emails are scams that seem to come from a trusted source but trick you into giving up private information or taking risky actions.

Even with the Village of Freeport security measures, YOU are still the best defense against phishing emails.

Think before you click—Quick steps

1. Recognize

Verify the sender is who you think it is.

How: Double-click or tap the sender’s name at the top of the email to view the real email address. Also, you can hover without clicking the name, to reveal the real email address.

2. Rethink

If you can't verify the sender, do not click at all.

How: If the email refers to a known website, type that website address into a new browser window instead and check for information there.

3. Report

Suspect it's a phish? Send the alert.

How: Contact the helpdesk(x3606 or helpdesk@freeportny.gov)
